Fashion Report

We are shaped and fashioned by the things we love” – Goethe

One of the strongest silhouettes to emerge at New York’s Bridal Fashion week was the dramatic trumpet, mermaid and fishtail shapes. This shape is now firmly front and centre of the new look for this coming season.

While the strapless gown remains the mainstay of most collections, V-necks, scoop necks and batteau / boat necklines were all on display.

Pleating, draping and ruching work their magic by emphasizing the curves of a bride and focussing on an hour glass shape. It is a continuing trend in bridal fashion that has strong 50’s overtones and harks back to a nostalgic era where Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly and the divine Audrey Hepburn ruled the cinematic landscape. Classic yet modern, these bridal gowns remain a perennial favourite.

Belts were everywhere. They continue to add a spontaneous burst of colour or sparkle as well as putting the focus back on the waist – yet another 50’s touch. Fabrics being used were lightweight taffeta, Thai silk, duppion, organza, silky satin and tulle.

Lightweight Chantilly and Alencon lace retain their popularity with designers and brides alike. Details found on gowns included jewelled broaches, hand cut cascading flowers; lace appliqués and trims, bows in all sizes and gorgeous, whimsical organza butterflies were featured at the Augusta Jones show.
