Kathleen & David

The Big Question

After 6 years of dating, Dave asked me to marry him on October 31, 2015. We had been planning on going to the Temple vs. Notre Dame football game in Philadelphia that night. Dave graduated from Temple University, and I have always been a huge Notre Dame fan, so we were ready for an exciting day of friendly competition. We decided to make a day of it, when we found out that ESPN had selected Philadelphia's historic Independence Mall for their weekly College Game Day show. Dave and I left my house at 4:30am and drove into the city. Little did I know that Dave had a ring in his pocket the whole time.

After spending several hours watching the live filming of the show, we still had a lot of time to kill before kickoff. We decided to take a walk around Philadelphia's beautiful Old City neighborhood, an area of the city where we spent a lot of time when we were in college. We found ourselves on a bench directly behind Independence Hall, when the conversation stopped. I asked Dave what was wrong, because all of a sudden he seemed very nervous. It was at that moment that he asked me to marry him. It was perfect.

After calling our families, we went to celebrate in quintessential Philadelphia style: lunch at our favourite cheesesteak spot. Later that night, Notre Dame went on to beat Temple in an exciting conclusion during the final moments of the game. Dave was a good sport, and we both remember this day as one of our favourites together.

Shop ''Til You Drop

The weekend after Dave and I got engaged, my mom and I snuck off to go look at wedding dresses without telling anyone. I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for, but I knew that I wanted to share this moment with just my mom. I didn't find my dress that day, but I am so thankful for the special time with my mom.

When my sister came home from college for Thanksgiving break, the three of us made an appointment at a different bridal shop. That experience wasn't great, and I felt a lot of pressure to purchase a dress I didn't love. During our appointment my mom snuck away and called another bridal shop just down the road to see if they could fit us in. Thank goodness they could! From the moment we walked into Nicole Bridal and Formal Shoppe I knew I would find my dress. The consultant, Marina, was super sweet and helpful, only pulling dresses that were in my budget and that would be comfortable in the summer heat.

The Augusta Jones Penny was the first dress she had me try on, and I knew right away that it would be my dress. I loved the way the fabric felt and flowed, and I knew it would be absolutely perfect for July! I paired the dress with a crystal and pearl beaded belt, and loved the buttons and unique floral detailing at the back of the dress. I could not imagine a more beautiful dress!

The Perfect Day

As soon as we saw the Philander Chase Knox Estate in Valley Forge National Historical Park, we knew it was the venue for us! The property is simply stunning, and the historical charm fit us perfectly. The house is owned by the park service and was vacant for many years before Robert Ryan Catering opened the doors for special events. I was sold long before I found out that President Theodore Roosevelt had attended a wedding at the Estate in 1904, but that certainly didn't hurt. I just love that Dave and I had a very small part in the history of this incredible place.

We were married on July 24, 2016. The day of our wedding was one of the hottest days of the summer, but despite the heat, everything was perfect! I can honestly say that my wedding day was not only incredibly fun, but also very relaxing. I am probably one of the only brides who has ever asked her bridesmaids to pick up Chipotle tacos to eat for lunch in the bridal suite. Anyway, I truly didn't feel a single nerve all day.

I was completely overjoyed and excited to marry my best friend. After a beautiful outdoor ceremony, we spent the entire evening celebrating and dancing with our family and closest friends. It really was the most incredible feeling to be celebrating our love, surrounded by the most important people in the world to both of us. July 24, 2016 was the most beautiful day of my life.

Wise Words

I would advise future brides to really take time to enjoy the engagement. I found that our engagement was such a special time in our lives. We took the time to really plan for our marriage, not just the wedding day. Try not to stress about the little things. The wedding day will come together just as it's supposed to!

I would also pass along some advice I was given by my best friend's mom the morning of my wedding day. She told me to intentionally stop and look around during the day and night to really take everything in. So, several times during our reception I did just that. I stopped for a moment and watched what was happening around me. I paid attention to how I was feeling. I saw the faces of all the people we love together in one place. Because of this, I have such vivd memories of the entire day that I will never forget. I can honestly say that my wedding day was not a blur at all!
