Linda & Matt

The Big Question

Matt proposed on April 8, 2016. We had been dating for almost two years and I assumed we would get engaged sometime that year, but I figured maybe sometime in the Fall, so I was surprised he proposed in the Spring!  It was a Friday night and we were getting ready to walk down to the Country Club Plaza from my apartment to have drinks before meeting friends for dinner (at least I thought that was the plan).

There is a long sidewalk that is hidden from the road that leads down towards the Plaza. He stopped me about halfway down (where we had our first kiss) gave a nervous speech, got down on one knee and popped the question. Then he said we were going to my parents for drinks instead of meeting friends and when we walked into their house our entire families were there (they travelled in from St. Louis, New York and Chicago). Not only was this a huge surprise, but later he had all our friends show up to surprise me as well.

It was so special to have all the people we care about most there to share in our excitement. I couldn't have planned it better myself. We popped champagne, had a nice dinner and partied into the night!

Shop 'Til You Drop

To be honest, I didn't have anything set in stone in my mind, I just knew I wanted something with a low back; I was open to trying on everything. My mom, grandma, and matron of honour went with me to two different places. I wanted to keep the group small and intimate and I also didn't want too many opinions to sway my decision. :) I liked a lot of the dresses I tried on at the first place and even thought I had maybe found the one.

In the afternoon, we went to Altar Bridal and I had convinced myself that it was a waste of time and that I had already decided on a dress. Then my grandma pointed out a dress in the store that looked like what I was looking for; it had a beautiful scalloped, lacy low back. I tried it on first and the second I looked at my Mom and Grandma's faces, I knew it was the one. It was a lovely champagne colour with an ivory lace overlay, which complemented my fair skin and red hair perfectly. Not to mention I felt great in it!

The Perfect Day

It truly was the best day of our lives. I'll never forget how much it rained the days leading up to our special weekend. I checked the weather about ten times a day (as if it was going to change that much). We ended up with a perfect sunny weekend.

That morning we got ready and had our hair and makeup done at my parents' house (my childhood home). It was just a nice relaxing day, but the anticipation to see Matt was killing me! Around 2pm we headed towards the country club for our first look/pictures. I had a special first look with my brother and then my first look with Matt. It was such a sweet moment and I will never forget it.

The ceremony was at Village Presbyterian Church and following the ceremony guests headed straight to Kansas City Country Club for cocktail hour while the wedding party took a party bus to Loose Park for a few more pictures.

I will never forget walking into the country club and seeing everything set up. You spend so much time planning and talking about the wedding, I just wanted to soak it all up. We had all the dining tables inside and the band and dance floor tented outside on the patio. It was more beautiful than I ever could have imagined and I will never forget all the little details and how everything came together perfectly. The band (Lost Wax) absolutely killed it and no one wanted to leave. I think we finally had to let the band go around 12:30am.

Wise Words

Truly just enjoy your day and be in the moment. There are a lot of things that you can get wrapped up in when planning a wedding. I was so worried about others and the details - on my wedding day I finally relaxed and started thinking about myself and appreciating each part of the day.

The day can sort of feel like a blur when you look back, so I recommend a good videographer and photographer to capture everything you don't get to see.
