Kathy & Thomas

The Big Question

Thomas surprised me on my 30th Birthday by taking me to our mutual friend’s jewellery workshop to pick up a necklace. As I walked into the shop he had a bottle of fizz and a notepad ready for me to design my own engagement ring with the help of the designer, Patricia Nieman. Months passed and I hadn’t heard about the progress of the ring.

Thomas took me for a hike across the Scottish Northern Highland coastline at the start of December. We camped out in a remote bothy called Freisgill. The next morning he took me for a walk along the coast line and as the sun was rising he got down on one knee and presented me with the ring. It was the most beautiful proposal, there was no phone signal and we enjoyed hours celebrating just the two of us.

Shop 'Til You Drop

I was so excited to go dress shopping as I have always loved wedding dresses and the artistry that goes into every one! A friend from school had recently opened the most beautiful bridal boutique in Aberdeen ‘Ivory Grace’ and I was desperate to go there for my first dress shopping appointment. It was the most wonderful day with my bridesmaids, close friends and my mum. I enjoyed every second of trying on different shapes and styles.

I loved Augusta Jones styles and managed to slim my choices to Martha and Violet. I took time to think and explore a few other choices but it became clear that I had my heart set on one style and couldn’t forget about it! When it came to the final decision, it was very much heart over head and I completely fell for the shape, lace and fit of ‘Violet’. The lace and detail made me feel classic, modern and glamorous.

I loved every second of wedding dress shopping and was fascinated by the detail and beauty in the dresses. I have always been slightly self conscious but couldn’t believe how beautiful a stunning wedding dress can make you feel.

The Perfect Day

Thomas and I planned a rustic village wedding with a focus on keeping everything personal and relaxed. The wedding was in the small village where I grew up (Edzell, Scotland) in Edzell Parish Church and Edzell Panmure Arms Hotel. It meant everything to me be married in a place full of my happiest memories.

Everything on the day was within walking distance which allowed us to take time over every moment. We were able to walk (led by the piper) over to our venue with the entire wedding party behind us. We decorated the venue with autumnal pine cones, candles and autumnal flowers. We were able to personalise every element of our day. Thomas’ mum made the cake and jars of personalised jam for each guest.

Music was extremely important to us and was played by friends and family throughout the day from our ceremony music to ceilidh music played by my father’s band. I even summoned some champagne bravery and sang myself after the toasts and speeches. Everything, including the photographer, was deeply personal to both of us and led to a day with endless laughter and smiles. We got our photographs taken minutes from the venue at our favourite places to walk. The scenery was beautiful and allowed us a rare moment alone to take in the excitement of the day. The night ended with a wild ceilidh and plenty of laughter!

Wise Words

Nothing prepared me for how wonderful it would be feel to actually ‘get married’. All of the details, planning, table plans and favours are nothing in comparison to the feeling of giddiness and extreme happiness you feel as you stumble over your vows looking into each other’s eyes. Stress and weddings tend to go hand in but for me just letting go of it all on the day gave me the best day of my life.
