Stephanie & Devin

The Big Question

Devin proposed on April 9, 2016 on a marina in Coconut Grove. He told me we were attending a work happy hour with his co-workers. As we wandered around the marina looking at the boats, I started to wonder where everyone was but Devin assured me that his co-workers were just on "typical Miami time" (basically 30 minutes late to everything!).

We started to head back to the front of the marina and Devin started to head down the dock, before I realized it, Devin was down on one knee asking me to marry him.My immediate reaction was "YES!",  I quickly realized, there was no happy hour but instead Devin had rented a boat for us to take us out on the bay for a sunset cruise. He had a sign made that said "Steph - will you marry me?" and he had our favorite bottle of wine and a cheese board set-up on board the boat. I was speechless and the day/night could have not been more perfect.

When we got back from the sunset cruise, Devin had made reservations for us at Wolfgang's for dinner. We enjoyed dinner and drinks, all while trying to keep up with answering texts and calls from family and friends. We were then able to join several of our friends for drinks at American Social, our favorite bar in the Brickell/Miami area. The night was never-ending and magical.

Shop 'Til You Drop

Being that we live in Miami but our wedding was going to take place back up north, where Devin and I are originally from, I really wanted to find my dress close to home. I went to about 10 different stores in the NJ, NY, and PA areas and tried on about 100 dresses. I tried on, what feels like, every material and every style but I always knew in my mind I wanted a dress with sleeves but with a little sexy appeal, aka a low back.

The struggle I found with low backs was that most were extremely revealing and Devin and I were getting married in a Catholic church. My sister, my mom, and my MOH stuck by my side and, if you ask them, they all knew the Joyce Augusta Jones dress was the one from the moment I put it on. However, I wasn't so sure, it was really hard for me to imagine what the dress would look like once fitted.

I went back to Miami several times without picking a dress but in my head kept coming back to the Joyce dress and the pictures I had taken. I was also able to find the model picture online and see the dress fitted correctly. I realized the Joyce gave me everything I was looking for; sleeves, low back, fitted bodice, not too revealing or clingy while still providing shape, and cleavage. I returned to NJ and placed my order with fingers crossed that I would absolutely fall in love once it was fitted to me!

The Perfect Day

Devin and I really wanted an intimate wedding with our closest family and friends. We wanted a venue that displayed and encompassed the things that Devin and I love; the fall up north, rustic charm, and classic elegance. We also wanted the entire weekend to feel warm and inviting.

I looked at about 20 venues but Devin knew Holly Hedge Estate was the one from the moment he stepped onto the estate. The estate provided everything we could have asked for; the fall scenery/backdrop for our photos, space for all of our guests to spend the evening (between the estate itself and the sister B&B), after party venue, easy to work with day of coordinators, and ultimately the overarching warm and intimate feeling.

The venue was easy to personalize and transform into our oasis for the weekend. We were the only event there on Saturday, November 18, 2017 when we got married and it was picture perfect, despite some slight rain!

Wise Words

For me, the planning process was very hands-on but that made me feel so much more relaxed. I knew in my heart I had taken care of everything I could and then the week of the wedding I let everything go and let it out of my control. I utilized my family, friends, vendors, anyone and everyone for what they were good at and for what they offered. It really takes a village to make the day go smoothly; Devin and I were so lucky to have so many people wanting to be a part of our village and offering their hands/services to help.

Enjoy every moment because it really does fly by and don't sweat the small stuff on the day, no one will notice all the minor slip-ups and details besides you! It was raining on our wedding day but Devin and I had picked our venue because of the outside scenery, even though I knew and realized my train and the bottom of my dress would get dirty I just went with it and we took all of our pictures outside! After seeing our pictures, I am glad I did - it was totally worth it and I've gotten my dress cleaned and preserved since and now it's perfect again!
