The Big Question

Tom proposed in 2016 on our holiday of a lifetime in Canada. We both love mountains (being from the Lake District) and had gone out for a day trip to Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. We took the cable car to the very top and sat overlooking the whole of Vancouver.

Tom set up his go pro for a photo and just after we posed for the photo, he proposed and got down onto one knee! It was like something out of a dream, and best of all, he had managed to catch it all on camera!

Shop 'Til You Drop

My dress hunt was very short. I visited 1 shop in Lancaster and then had booked an appointment at Mears Ghyll. As soon as we arrived, I knew I would find my dress there. Elizabeth and Camilla are so welcoming and knowledgeable about their dresses and calmed my bride to be nerves no time!

I tried on various dresses but kept settling back with the Marsha and Sophia dresses from Augusta Jones. Elizabeth suggested that we take more of the shape of Marsha that I loved and the lace top of the Sophia to make a bespoke dress. Absolute perfection!

We then visited Mears Ghyll again to get the bridesmaid dresses and I couldn’t have imagined going anywhere else. Mears Ghyll is a different level of bridal shop to their competitors. The calm, homely atmosphere makes it a truly special place to find your dream dress.

The Perfect Day

After only 2 hours sleep, I was fairly nervous as I sat overlooking Lake Windermere on the morning of the wedding. The groomsmen and close male friends all had a splash in the lake first thing and then the getting ready regime officially began! As hair and make up arrived, it all seemed to become very real and the bucks fizz started flowing! We had nicknamed my dress ‘the eagle’ as my Aunty had to keep it at her house and bring it to the hotel with her. So the arrival of ‘the eagle’ was much anticipated during the morning. When ‘the eagle’ landed in my room, squeals ran round the room and it just looked stunning! I couldn’t wait to get it on and finally show Tom my outfit! My Dad had purposely not known anything about the dress, so Lisa wanted to do a first look photo with dad which was really special. It was lovely to have a quiet moment with him before it all began!

We had our ceremony at the hotel as well as the reception, so the soggy weather couldn’t affect our plans, or dampen our spirits. After a short but sweet ceremony, we had the longest confetti line I have ever seen and then began mingling and celebrating with our family.

After our meal, we went out onto the lake for a cruise with all our guests. The rain held off for most of the cruise, meaning some great moody photos on the top deck! We had a musician (Pete Lashley) playing on the boat and this ended up being the favourite part of the day for most of our guests! Everyone singing their hearts out to Elvis Presley’s 'Can’t Help Falling in Love’ will forever be one of my fondest wedding memories!

And then came the endless dancing during the evening party! We had The Seals band for music and the dance floor was never empty. We had the most amazing day from start to finish, and just wish we could do it all over again!

Wise Words

I would advise any brides to be to try not to overthink the small things. Things like table plans and place cards can take over your life if you’re not careful. Instead we focused on the big elements of the day that our guests (and us) would always remember, like the boat cruise and the photo booth. We went for a simple yet elegant feel for the day, with nothing having too much fuss.
